Isn’t 5:00 a little early for working types?  If I can’t make it there by then  I will be there at 5:30 if anyone wants to start then.

Everyone ready to get on those mountain bikes?  We'll be having a group mountain bike ride at Coweeta Hydrological Lab on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.  Dress warm as it's suppose to be chilly and Coweeta Lab is always about 10 degrees colder.  I don't expect that we will need lights this Wednesday but we may on future rides.

We'll be planning some group outings and will provide rental mountain bikes for all those who want to give mountain biking a chance.  So, watch for more emails on future rides.  Most mountain bike group rides will be on Sunday due to the time change in November.

Our 5th Annual Tour de Franklin was a great day, beautiful weather, great turn out, and awesome riders.  Tour de Franklin would not be a success without our volunteers and sponsors who made the day run smoothly.  We appreciate having Franklin Amateur Radio to provide communications.  We had approximately 90 riders and the first 100 miler came in under 6 hours.  Amazing!  Thanks to everyone for their help and support.

Saturday Stonewall Reminder - MARC SORBA

We are planning a trail work day on Saturday September 27th at the Stonewall Falls area.  This will be a hand tool event mostly focusing on the white twister trail which has a lot of downed trees and overhanging stuff.  Bring hand tools.  Lets meet at the Waffle House in Clayton at 8:00am and then over at the trailhead around 9:00.  Don't go all the way to the parking lot but park at the first power line as that is where the most need is and it is in the middle of the trail so we can split up and catch it all.  We can post a car in the lot to shuttle us back to the beginning making it 2 miles for each group.

ride report

Well we had 4 brave souls risk the MARC sorba ride today.  We went up to sawmill gap on rd. 711 just past the top of wayah mountain.

In attendance were myself, Scott Baste, Neal Muldoon from Rabun Gap, Craig Tinsley and Chris Guzzetta from Baldwin.  We rode the 15 mile double loop and then stopped at the cars.  They said that they hadn’t had enough so we rode about 12 more making the day 27 miles.  We were all pooped when we got back to the cars the second time.  See the cool photo’s of us and Chris’s arm (not as bad as it looks) at the 14 mile point.  The weather was great and the trail was spectacular.  We all agreed that the 9.3 mile paved road section at the end was well worth it after the 3 mile 2000 descent we had.

In other news, we are planning a trail work day on Saturday September 27th at the Stonewall Falls area.  This will be a hand tool event mostly focusing on the white twister trail which has a lot of downed trees and overhanging stuff.  Bring hand tools.  Lets meet at the waffle house in clayton at 8:00am and then over at the trailhead around 9:00.  don’t go all the way to the parking lot but park at the first power line as that is where the most need is and it is in the middle of the trail so we can split up and catch it all.  We can post a car in the lot to shuttle us back to the beginning making it 2 miles for each group.

Mountain bike ride saturday morning

Join MARC sorba for a ride in one of the most beautiful places in Macon county. We will meet at Loafers Glory at 8:30 Saturday morning and go up to road 711. Ride options of 10 and 15 or even 20 miles. Elevations over 5000 ft. will insure that you don't overheat. The trail is what I would consider intermediate. There are a few short areas where you might have to walk but not too much. This is a very remote part of the county and I have seen wild pigs, bear prints, turkeys, grouse, deer, etc. A good mixture of dirt double track and singletrack. I will be having breakfast at Otto Café at 0700 if you would like to join me.

Labor Day Ride

Some of you have met Lewis Smith on some of our Wednesday Group Road Rides.  Lewis is doing "Ride the West", 400+ mile trek around Western North Carolina, setting goal to raise $50,000 to help boys and girls in the care of Baptist Children's Homes.  On Monday, September 1st he begins his final stage of his bicycle ride with final destination in Clyde on September 4th at the Baptist Children's Homes West Area Conference.

In support of his journey, we are having a bicycle ride from the bike shop on Monday at 9am to ride with Lewis as he begins his final stage of his ride.  The route will go up and over Cowee Mtn and then we will stop at the Exxon station over near Dillsboro.  We can decide if we want to just come back over Cowee Mtn or we can loop around 107, to Tilley Creek and back up and over the mountain (this would be almost 60 miles and quite of abit of climbing), so we'll decide the morning of the ride depending upon who wants to do what.  This would be a good preparation ride for the Tour de Franklin coming up in October.

SORBA Meeting Next Tuesday Night 7-8 and Work Party 7-12

We will have our next SORBA meeting next Tuesday as Scott Baste’s house. Meet at 5:30 to ride the Buckeye Branch trail. Then bring a dish for pot luck dinner which will be at 8:00. The work party will be at Coweeta Lab on Saturday 7-12. We will be meeting at Otto CafĂ© at 8:00 for some coffee and biscuits then going to the parking lot at approx 8:45 or so. Bring hand tools only. I would like to work on the “tunnel of love trail” and if we have enough people for two work parties, we should be able to work on the wheelbarrow trail as well.

Tuesday & Wednesday Group Road Ride

This Tuesday we will climb Standing Indian. We'll leave from Cartoogechay Baptist Church, just off 64W, at 5:30. Slower folks like me can leave a little earlier, and all you speed demons can leave a little later. That way, we all might get to the top at about the same time. We can come down as a group and finish with a paceline.  See you there. Call me with any ?'s   4210460    Gus

Wednesday Group Road Ride will be from S Macon Elementary School on Addington Bridge Road at 5:30pm.  We'll be doing the Patton Valley Loop.  For those folks who might be interested, we'll go to Monte Alban for dinner afterwards.  Hope to see everyone there.
